Obituary

Benjamin E. Tagg, 80 of Allegan, died Saturday, December 11, 2004 at his home. Mr. Tagg was born June 5, 1924 in Allegan, MI the son of Arthur and Laura (Smith) Tagg. He was a graduate of Allegan High School Class of 1943 and that fall entered the Army during World War II. Ben fought in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a member of the 30th Infantry Old Hickory Division, and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and Platoon Leader. He was a decorated veteran who received a Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action on October 10, 1944 in Germany. Sergeant Tagg's gallant and courageous action enabled his squad to hold off the attacking enemy successfully until reinforcements arrived. He had worked at Rockwell International for 20 years retiring in 1985. He loved to hunt, fish and garden. Surviving are his wife, Jean, whom he married on Sept. 29, 1945; 3 children and their spouses, David & Heidi Tagg of Coopersville, Steve & Carol Tagg of West Olive, Sherry & Rick Brown of Hudsonville; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ethel Phillips of Holland, Mary Ellen Strickfaden of Burnips; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 sister, Willa Lankerd. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 pm at the GORDEN FUNERAL RESIDENCE, Allegan Chapel, where a Memorial Service will be held Wednesday 11:00 a.m. Pastor Joseph Phipps officiating. Military graveside services in Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan, under the auspices of the Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030.
