Obituary

Arnold "Bill" Doornhaag, 80 of Gobles, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002 after a prolonged illness. Mr. Doornhaag was born August 16, 1921 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Joseph and Dieuwke (VerBries) Doornhaag. He came from a family of 10 brothers and sisters and had lived in the Kalamazoo area. In 1944 he entered World War II and was sent to Italy. He fought in many courageous battles and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and the Oak Leaf Cluster during the five day battle to liberate Livergano. He also was given 3 purple hearts and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was married to Beatrice Larsen and they had 4 children, who all reside in the Barry County Area. He later married Jean "Bobbie" Mowry and they have remained married for 30 years. Bill and Bobbie enjoyed raising horses and were involved in standard bred race horses for a time. Bill also enjoyed restoring old buggies and carts, traveling to Shipshewana to search for rare buggies or another horse, and timing the harness races at the Allegan County Fair. He was a past member of the Michigan Harness Horse Association. Surviving are his wife, Bobbie; 4 children, Bill & Laura Doornhaag, Daniel & Dawn Doornhaag, Sandra & Paul Harrison, Jacqueline Doornhaag; 3 stepchildren, Joni & Skip Tucker, Tony & Marilyn Mowry, Tim Mowry; 6 brothers and sisters, Joe & Amber Doornhaag, Frank & Carol Doornhaag, Ruth Berghuis, Johanna & Ted Rivers, Mary Goble, Dori & Ted Walters; grandchildren, Cheri & Steve VanSickle, Danny & Sally Doornhaag, Matthew & Joshua Tucker, Nick & Jason Emmons, 2 great grandsons, Joshua & Jeremy VanSickle. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Ype Doornhaag, 2 sisters, Louise Trudell and Kathryn Smith. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday 3:00 pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Chaplain Richard Goldsmith will be presiding over the celebration of Bill's life. Military honors will be presented by the Otsego VFW Post #3030. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
