of Gobles, formerly of Allegan and Plainwell, died Friday, September 11, 2009 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Rice was born June 15, 1936 in Allegan, the son of Charles and Lucille (Hending) Rice. Arlyn graduated from Allegan High School in 1954, he then went to Detroit an attended Green's Barber School. He owned and operated Rice's Barber Shop in Kalamazoo from 1959 - 1972, he then went to work for Upjohn for the next 25 years. He was a member of the Plainwell Conservation Club. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis, 4 children, Todd and Melanie Rice of Lawton, Sheri and Russ James of Gobles, Dixie and Bryan Lake of Byron Center, and Denise Ball of Gobles, 11 grandchildren, 1 brother, Doug and Linda Rice of NV, 1 niece, Susan and Todd Allen and 2 nephews, Glen and Marilyn Rice and Matt Rice, several cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Russell "Dean". Friends may meet with the family on Sunday from 2-5 pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 pm at the Merson Church. Interment Mallory Cemetery, Trowbridge Twp. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc. or the Lupus Foundation.
