Obituary

Allegan, Michigan, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005. Mrs. McGowan was born October 16, 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Louis and Leona (Case) Akerson. Her family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, where Angelin was the milliner of Hannibal's largest department store following high school. She married Clyde S. McGowan, who predeceased her in July, 2003. They celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary on May 26, 2003. In 1945, the McGowans moved to Allegan, Michigan, where together they established McGowan's Men's Store, which became one of Michigan's most successful men's clothing stores. Angelin was a longtime active member of the Allegan First Congregational Church, Allegan Hospital Service League and Ot-Well-Egan Country Club. Surviving Mrs. McGowan are her daughters, Karen Stegeman Miller of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Neysa Geupel, and her husband, Carl, also of Kalamazoo. In addition, four grandchildren and their spouses and two great-grandchildren survive. They are John M. and Linda Stegeman, Lauren Geupel, Thomas and Lori Stegeman and their children, Sean and Paige, and Leslie Geupel. A sister-in-law, Dorothy Akerson, and eight nieces and nephews also survive. Predeceasing Mrs. McGowan, in addition to her husband, were four brothers, Oliver, Russell, Winston and Arthur; one sister, Elna; and a son-in-law, John L. Stegeman. A family memorial service will be held at Grandview Cemetery in Hannibal, Missouri, at a later date.
