Andrew Jon Smit passed on January 13, 2026. He was born to his parents Terry and Jeanne (Durian) Smit on June 22, 1976, in Plainwell, MI. Andrew was the part owner and operator of the Hopkins Elevator and Peaceful Roads Farms. Outside of work, he loved to cook, BBQ, and bake delicious food for anyone that was over. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, Star Wars movies, identifying insects, collecting vintage Looney Tunes cups, and building with Legos. Andrew was also a talented craftsman, creating things out in his man shed. He shared over 25 years with his spouse, Lisa Black and spared nothing to keep her happy. They together believed in keeping their doors open to anyone, feeding them, providing love and a safe place to call home. Andrew loved his family, especially his children and foster kids. He led by example and is missed deeply.
He is survived by his spouse, Lisa Black; mother, Jeanne Smit; children, Mckenna Black, Ethan Black, Aurora Black, Ericka Black, and Liam Black; siblings, Becky (Stan) Vanderpol, Emily (Kevin) Martin; sibling in-laws, Amy Smit, Laura (Kevin) Grate, and Richard (Amy) Black; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Terry Smit; son, Dillon Orvis; brother, Paul Smit; in-laws, Richard and Nancy Black; and brother in-law, Roger Black.
Andrew's visitation will be from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Sunday, January 18th. His funeral service will be the following day at 12:00 PM with an hour's visitation from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Monday, January 19th. Both visitations and funeral service will be at Hopkins Community Church 2142 128th Avenue, Hopkins, MI 49328. Luncheon to follow the service in the church fellowship hall. A private burial of Andrews ashes will occur at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the family in Lisa Blacks name and or Wedgewood Christian Services.
The funeral service will be live streamed by Hopkins Community Church.
