Allegan Twp., MI, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Life Care Center of Plainwell. Mrs. Smalla was born Oct. 2, 1929 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Kazmier and Valeria (Gasunas) Petroshus. She was a 1947 graduate of Allegan High School. She was a life member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and past president of the Altar Society. She had been employed with Bartz/Rumery Ins. Agency for 27 years and had been a member of the Elks Lodge. On May 21, 1949 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles Jackson "Jack" Smalla, who preceded her in death May 8, 2008. Surviving are 5 sons, James and Debbie of Plainwell, Steven and Thelma of Allegan, Thomas and Deborah of Otsego, Jeffrey of Arizona, and Douglas and Kim of Allegan; 5 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Jerry, Frank and Ed Petroshus and 1 sister, Irene Smith. Friends may meet with the family from 2-5 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Alan P. Jorgensen and Rev. Fr. Donald Weber, Celebrants. Interment in the Church Cemetery.
