died May 16, 2014 in Indianapolis, IN. She was born in 1911 in Allegan, MI the daughter of Guy Edmon and Mary Alice Cooper Fairfield. She graduated from Allegan High School in 1929. After a year at Hillsdale College, she transferred to Western State Teachers College in Kalamazoo, MI. She graduated with a degree in Education in 1933. Her first job was as a teacher in the Monterey Center one room country school for 2 years. She remembered paying the janitor $5 a month to sweep, clean the boards, start the fire and lock up, coming in the morning and afternoon. Her salary was $45 a month. In 1935 she transferred to Allegan High School where she taught Commercial subjects (typewriting & shorthand) until her marriage in 1939. Married women could not hold a teaching position at that time in Michigan. After she and her husband Forrest Maskey moved to Georgia, she taught in Cobb County from 1959 to 1972. Her memories were of very cooperative students, both boys and girls, who were interested in learning. Mrs. Maskey came to Indianapolis in 1998, two years after her husband's death, to be near her half-brother James Fairfield and his family. She is survived by him and his wife Martha. Mrs. Maskey also is survived by three nieces, Cathy Fairfield (Mike Ideran), Nancy Martin (Michael), and Susan Fairfield (Terry Yoder), as well as 17 great and great-great nieces and nephews. Each of these persons was an important part of Mrs. Maskey's life and gave her treasured moments especially in her later years. Her family will miss her. The Rev. Dr. Cathy Fairfield will conduct the graveside service to be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Allegan, on Wednesday May 28 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
