Edmund Grentz, 91, of Delton, MI and formerly of Allegan, MI passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at home with his family by his side. Born in Konstantza, Romania, he was the son of the late Gotthilf and Erna (Steinmeier) Grentz. The family moved to Austria when he was just eleven years old and then eventually settled in Czechoslovakia. After two years of living in Czechoslovakia, due to the war, they became refugees who would travel for months by horse and wagon in order to return to Austria. A short while later, the Grentz family headed to West Germany and then to the United States in 1952. Mr. Grentz met Erika Katherina Berner in San Francisco in 1953. They married on July 11, 1954 and spent fifty-three happy years together as husband and wife prior to her death in 2007. He was a 1957 graduate of Emmanuel Missionary College which later became Andrews University, where he earned his BA degree in religion with a minor in history. Edmund spent more than thirty years as a pastor in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. His career took his family to many places having been assigned to churches in Grand Haven, MI; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; Queens, NY; Morristown, NJ; Warren, East Detroit, Coldwater, Burlington, Holly, Otsego and Allegan, MI. His health led to an earlier than anticipated official retirement from the ministry, but he never stopped witnessing to others throughout the rest of his life.

Pastor Grentz is survived by his children, Gudrun Mahrle, RN, Dietmar (Tracey) Grentz, MD, Gerhild (Thomas) Ulrich, RN and Daniel (Ruth) Grentz, DVM; brothers, Gerhard (Therese) Grentz and Horst (Theresia) Grentz; and grandchildren, Derrick Mahrle, Darrell (Amanda) Mahrle, Janelle Grentz, Brandon Grentz, Ryan (Rachel) Grentz, Noelle Herman, Carmen Herman, Raymond Ulrich, Erik Ulrich, Shadrach Grentz, Leah Grentz and Katherina Grentz.

In addition to his parents, Gotthilf and Erna, and his wife, Erika, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Gertrude Landis and Ingrid Grentz.

A private graveside service has taken place and Edmund has been laid to rest beside Erika in Lindsley Cemetery, Cheshire Township, Michigan. A memorial service will take place at the St. Joseph Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1201 Maiden Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085 at a date and time to be determined due to the recent restrictions on gathering size during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Memorial contributions may be made to Battle Creek Academy, 480 Parkway Drive, Battle Creek, MI 49037.
